Anal Bleaching in the Media

"Most places offer the initial application at the spa for about $100-150, then sell you a set of the bleaching lotion or gel to use at home. The whole in-spa process takes about 20 minutes, one Sacramento technician told us. Depending on how dark your skin is, you may need to reapply a number of times to see results. One Los Angeles spa even said that for some people they recommend applying it twice a week for up to eight weeks."

"Much to my ignorance, bleaching one's anus (I guess to bring it back to its budlike, puckish pink) has become an obsession far beyond the young jet set and the detail-oriented gay community. These days, anal-bleaching creams can be purchased as easily as cough drops."

"The safe pigment reducers are vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin B3 (niacin). Other herbs like emblica and licorice, and fruit acids like glycolic acid, also work. Beware, however, because the most common skin lightener, hydroquinone, is not uniformly safe. It's been banned in Europe and the FDA has proposed to ban it in the US. Hydroquinone may cause cancer and it causes rashes and can even darken the skin."

Anal Bleaching Methods

Anal Bleaching once was a treatment used almost exclusively by adult entertainers and carried out in underground spas using "questionable" methods, to say the least. Nowadays, it has evolved into a multimillion-dollar business that is receiving plenty of positive mainstream media coverage. Thankfully, the business is not as sketchy as it once was, and there are now several safe ways to go about what was once a risky beauty treatment. However, there are pros and cons to using each bleaching method.

Laser Anal Bleaching

Light-based treatment is by far the most expensive method of anal bleaching, but is also the easiest way to see instant results after treatment. Laser treatments may hurt though, depending on the treatment, the pain may range from being repeatedly slapped with a rubber band for several minutes at a time to pain that requires local anesthetic for weeks. Also, laser treatment causes irritation, which may result in blistering or peeling. This irritative effect is even worse for darker-skinned people.

Spa-Based Skin Lightening

It may seem appropriate that the same people who do your Brazilian waxing would also bring you anal bleaching. That makes the most sense to at least a segment of the population, since some people prefer to go to the spa to get their anal bleaching done.

There are Three "P's" that define the main problems with getting your anal lightening treatment done at the spa: privacy, price, and professionalism.

  • Privacy is an issue because the anal area is probably the most private of any area: if you think about it, women and men alike will talk about their other private areas in casual conversation with their close friends, but how often does the anal area come into conversation? Almost never. Because of this, many people shy away from having someone else work with this sensitive region.

  • Price is another major issue with spa-based bleaching treatments. Spa-based anal lightening treatments often cost more than $150 per visit, and it's the norm to visit a spa 6 or 7 times over the course of anal lightening, not to mention any "maintenance" treatments in the future. Most people simply can't afford to spend that type of money, and if they can, they may not consider it worth it, anyway.

  • Professionalism is the last major issue with spa-based anal bleaching treatments. In order to produce instant, easily visible results and to help their customers feel as if they're getting their money's worth, spas may use extremely harsh lightening treatments on their customers. Oftentimes, spas will use treatments that contain hydroquinone, a bleaching ingredient that has been banned in the European Union for its links to cancer, with no regard for the safety of their customers. This is obviously an important consideration for those considering spa-based treatments.

At-Home Skin Lightening

At-home skin lightening can be safer, less expensive, less painful, and certainly more private of an option than any of the other methods here; you just need to do your research first.

The most important thing to remember if choosing the at-home anal bleaching option is that you need to pick the right cream, and that anal bleaching is not an instant process. Luckily for you, we've written a brief how-to guide on how to pick a safe and effective anal lightening product, just click here to read it.

As for the process, it's best to keep in mind that you want gradual "anal lightening", not instant "anal bleaching." So-called instant results often come with uncomfortable irritation and other side effects, and I'm sure we can all agree that irritation is a bad thing, especially in this case.
